Punta Dumalag: Sea Turtles’ Sanctuary

12Aug07

What makes a Dabawenyo breed stand out? I just read something about sea turtles or pawikan captured in Bicol then ends up being pulutan. No offense to Bicolanos but here in Davao given the same situation our reaction is quite different.

Let’s just say almost 4 years ago Councilor Leo Avila of Davao City 1st District and his staff where busy creating artificial reefs for a Davao Gulf project. They discovered a nesting site of hawksbill turtles and green sea turtles on the shores of Punta Dumalag, Matina. What do you think would they do after that? Surely, not to gather those turtles for a free pulutan but instead Avila instantly prepared resolution declaring the area as sea turtles’ sanctuary.

Hawksbill turtles and green sea turtles are endangered species. Davao City government, LGU’s, private firms and the entire dabawenyos join forces to save those creatures. You know what? At present there are now more than 2,000 hatchlings since the nesting ground was discovered. Punta Dumalag could become one of the most important nesting site of sea turtles in the world which I think is very amazing considering that Matina is very close to urban area. What are the odds of a rare species being a common sight to Dabawenyos? Simply amazing.
