SMX Convention Center inside SM Lanang is operational this coming April.

This project is really flipping me out because the city is in need of a facility like this one pretty badly. Anyway, I am guessing that SM Lanang Mall must be opening its doors to the public this April because inside the mall is where the SMX Convention Center is located. You can read more of SMDC projects in their website. Meanwhile, here are its features.

  • SMX Davao scheduled to be operational by April 2012.
  • Gross Floor Area: 8000 sqm
  • 3 Function rooms
  • 4 Meeting rooms
  • Located in SM Lanang, Davao

Construction workers working on a 3-storey passenger lounge building for Davao City Transport Overland Terminal.

I am excited for this specially the terminal’s security system and the e-pass passenger payment system. The system will be at par with the modern terminal facilities that are available in advance countries.

Flourishing business establishments resulting to high in business tax collection.

At least now Davao decreased its dependence on IRA which is actually not a bad thing.

THE bulk of Davao City’s total tax collection of P4.306 billion in 2011 came from business taxes with P766.871 million, the City Treasurer’s Office (CTO) announced Wednesday.

City Treasurer Rodrigo Riola, speaking at the weekly Club 888 Forum at the Marco Polo Hotel Davao, said the collection in business taxes represents an increase of 111.44 percent compared to the previous year.

CTO also reported that the P4.306-billion collection is P200 million higher than its target for 2011. The figure represented an increase of 363 percent from the P55-million excess in 2010.

Riola attributed the very high collection to the efficiency of their personnel in monitoring business establishments in the city. read more

Local Police will solve crimes much faster and easier as more surveillance CCTV cameras will be installed in strategic locations around the city.

With additional surveillance around the city, Davao is guaranteed safer for dabawenyos and tourists.

The city government has set aside P10 million for the installation of 10 closed circuit television cameras in strategic areas as part of its security measures. The cameras, said Magno G. Adalin, city public safety officer, are expected to deter street crime.

“The city government wants to ensure that everyone is secure from unscrupulous people,” said Mr. Adalin, noting criminals would think twice about committing crimes if they think their actions are recorded on video.Mr. Adalin assured the public that the city government does not have any intention of violating human rights or people’s privacy, but believes that by installing cameras, it would be easier for the public to report crimes and for the authorities to solve those crimes. read more (Carmelito Q. Kuya Ed is one of the many buffet restaurants in Davao City.

GMA news network national TV show called POPtalk was here in Davao. The show featured the best buffet restaurants in Davao City. The episode was aired last Tuesday January 10, 2012.

Davao is the country’s food basket where people can buy quality food cheaply. The abundance of food resulted in the proliferation of restaurants all over the city. GMA Network can’t help but notice it and featured Davao’s booming restaurant business in their channel. Nice show by the way.

Foreign and local tourists arrived in Davao International Airport.

I believe Davao City needs more hotels to accommodate these increasing giddy tourists who are expected to visit Davao this year.

The city government is intensifying its promotional campaign to attract more visitors as it envisions tourist arrivals to increase by 10% this year. Jason C. Magnaye, city tourism operations officer, said the city government will spend at least P10 million to promote Davao this year.

Mr. Magnaye said this amount could increase since Mayor Sara Z. Duterte-Carpio is determined to set aside a bigger fund for promotional activities especially in Singapore and China.

The local government also spent roughly P10 million last year to lure mostly domestic visitors to the city. read more

The changing landscape of Davao City.

A robust influx of investments in the city was noted last year, marking a growth of 47.6 percent in terms of the amount of investments from the new businesses.

Davao City Investment and Promotion Center (DCIPC) chief Jason Magnaye reported that Davao City gained total investments of P3.68 billion from the new businesses in 2011 compared to the P2.5 billion investment in 2010.

Magnaye said the total investments reached to P187 billion, earning a growth of 2.6% for the city last year. In 2010, Davao City gained P183 billion, he added.

Though the DCIPC chief noted a decline in business permit renewals last year, substantial business ventures poured in, saying that these “largely came from property development projects or real estate investments.” read more

Davao City's skyline will change dramtically in the coming years.

In the past couple of years Dabawenyos witnessed the sprout of condominium complexes. Mostly, lowrise buildings around 5, 6,7 floors etc. and instantly condo units sell like hotcakes. Today, condominium is one of the most lucrative real estate market in Davao. The reason most probably is that the people are having a change in mindset with regards to dwellings. People think living in condominium unit is more practical as the city is growing faster.

Anyway, this year we got two highrise condominium projects launched for Davao City.  They are FTC’s AEON Towers at 35 storeys and Ayala’s Abreeza Condo at 26 storeys. Both towers will breach the 20 storey mark as currently, the tallest building in Davao is the 18 storey Marco Polo hotel.

The 26 storey Abreeza Condo located at Ayala Center Davao.

The AEON Towers soon to dominate Davao's skyline at 35 storeys.

SM Annex building almost finish and ready for opening this month.

The SM Annex, SM City Mall’s 4-level building expansion in Ecoland, will probably open this month as the building is now on its final stage of construction (see pics above borrowed from SSC). The building with its brightly colored polka rectangles will house more high end stores, an alfresco area, a cyberzone and BPO offices. The building will be connected to the newly renovated SM City mall by two bridges. Not too shabby for the old SM mall as it is now sporting a new polka rectangles as well and blends seamlessly with the Annex’s funky design.

Once opened, Davao’s BPO Industry continues to enjoy rapid growth as the malls 4th level is intended for call centers and other business process outsourcing facilities. It will create more job opportunities for Dabawenyos.
